P-61 Black Widow

The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was the first American aircraft specifically designed as a night fighter. Introduced during World War II, it featured a distinctive twin-boom layout and a crew of three: pilot, gunner, and radar operator. Its onboard radar system allowed it to detect and intercept enemy aircraft in complete darkness, a major technological leap at the time. Powered by two radial engines, the P-61 was heavily armed with four 20 mm cannons and four .50 caliber machine guns, giving it serious firepower. It served in both the European and Pacific theaters, tracking down enemy bombers and night raiders. Large, unconventional, and purpose-built for after-dark combat, the Black Widow proved that technology could turn the night sky into a battlefield.
