Highway Warriors

The text on the back of the blister explains perfectly what they are:

They’re dirty. They’re Dangerous. They rule the road in a world where there are no rules of the road. They’re the HIGHWAY WARRIORS – awesome armor tops you drop onto ordinary MICRO MACHINES vehicles – to transform them into mighty Renegade marauders! Get all the HIGHWAY WARRIORS and rule the road!

There are six different types of armor in the 1989 collection: The Disruptors, Savage Semi, Terror Tank, Rammin’ Rig, Dirty Dozer and Demon Drillers.

The vehicles used as the base for the armor are standard models that can be found in the 1987, 1988 and 1989 collections, but with different color schemes. Unfortunately, however, showing little imagination, two identical models were used for two different sets: the red Cargo Truck and the red Bulldozer.

In some cases, mounting the armor onto the model is almost impossible because there is not enough space between the internal rubber pieces to fit the vehicle’s roof, resulting in the armor sitting crooked.

These armors remind me a little of the vehicles from the Mad Max series; I can easily imagine them racing and battling across post-apocalyptic desert landscapes. Some of the armor, on the other hand, reminds me of Japanese robots from the 1970s, especially those equipped with drills. I don’t know how much appeal this line of Micro Machines had when it was released. I remember as a child that I wasn’t particularly impressed by them, and even today, as an adult, I feel the same way. In today’s collecting world, these models are not particularly sought after or widely collected.
