Torpedo

The Tucker Torpedo, officially known as the Tucker 48, was one of the most ambitious American cars of the late 1940s. Designed by Preston Tucker, it aimed to challenge Detroit’s conservative approach with bold engineering and advanced safety features. Its streamlined body stood out immediately, but the real innovation was underneath. The car featured a rear-mounted, horizontally opposed engine and a distinctive third “Cyclops” headlight that turned with the steering to improve visibility in corners. Safety was a central focus, with ideas such as a padded dashboard and a reinforced passenger compartment—rare concepts at the time. Only 51 production cars were completed before the company collapsed amid financial and legal troubles. Despite its short life, the Tucker became a symbol of independent vision and remains one of the most fascinating “what-if” stories in American automotive history.
